Frequently asked questions
Is the service charge the same as a tip?
Usually not. A mandatory service charge is revenue the caterer keeps to cover staffing and overhead, and only part of it, if any, reaches the servers. Ask directly whether gratuity is included or expected on top.
Why does the tax amount change when I flip the service charge switch?
When the service charge is taxable, the tax base grows by the amount of the charge. On a large invoice that can add several hundred dollars, which is why the tool makes it an explicit choice.
What if my caterer quotes one bundled price per person?
Put the bundled figure in the food field and set the bar field to 0. The service charge and tax will still be applied to the full subtotal.
